The puff count printed on a disposable vape is almost always derived from a laboratory test rather than real-world use. In the most common method, a machine draws a fixed volume of air through the device at a fixed speed, with a fixed gap between each puff, until the device stops producing vapor. The results of this test are then printed on the box. The problem is that machines do not vape the way people do. A lab draw might last one to two seconds, while a typical human draw lasts two to four seconds, sometimes longer.
A machine draws at a consistent, gentle airflow; a person may draw harder or softer depending on habit, mood or nicotine craving. The gap between puffs in a lab test can be ten seconds or more; in practice it might be ninety seconds, or thirty, or five. Every one of these variables affects how much e-liquid is consumed per puff, and none of them are standardized across manufacturers or required to be disclosed on the label under the current EU Tobacco Products Directive.
