Here’s where it becomes relevant to taste inconsistent voltage means inconsistent heat. And inconsistent heat means your e-liquid isn’t being vaporised at the same temperature as every puff. One draw might run slightly cool, producing thin, underdeveloped vapour that tastes flat and muted. The next might run slightly hot, scorching the edge of the wick and introducing a faint bitterness that has no business being there. Premium devices invest seriously in power regulation circuitry precisely because stable temperature equals stable taste. Many users blame a perfectly good liquid for problems that are entirely the device’s fault — an invisible compromise that only reveals itself on the palate over time.

The Coil: Where Taste Begins

The coil is the resistance wire that heats your e-liquid and converts it into vapour. Everything about the quality of your experience passes through it. Its material shapes the entire character of what you taste:

- Kanthal — the traditional choice. Durable, affordable, widely used. Runs warm and suits certain styles of vaping but can slightly distort more delicate taste profiles

- Stainless steel — runs cleaner and cooler, producing a more neutral, transparent experience where the liquid tastes more like itself without the coil adding its own character

- Mesh coils — instead of a wire spiral, mesh uses a flat grid structure that creates a dramatically larger heating surface. The result is more even heat distribution, faster ramp-up time, and noticeably better clarity and depth of taste. The difference between a standard wire coil and a quality mesh coil running the same liquid in the same device is not subtle — it’s detectable on the very first inhale

Coil resistance is another variable worth understanding. Lower resistance coils run hotter and produce more vapour — the sub-ohm territory favoured by users who prioritise cloud production and a warmer, more intense experience. Higher resistance coils run cooler and deliver a tighter draw that feels closer to a traditional cigarette. Neither is objectively better. They suit different preferences, different nicotine strengths, and different liquid formulations.

The Wick: The Unsung Component

The wick absorbs e-liquid from the tank and delivers it to the coil at exactly the right rate. When it works perfectly, you don’t notice it at all. When it fails in either direction, the consequences are immediate and unpleasant. Pack it too tightly and e-liquid can’t flow freely enough to keep pace with the heat — leading to dry hits that are harsh and acrid even on a brand-new device. E-Liquid Composition: PG, VG, and Flavourants

The base of virtually all e-liquids consists of two carrier substances: propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin — PG and VG. Their ratio has profound and immediate effects on the experience. PG is thin and carries taste compounds exceptionally well, producing sharp, defined, accurate profiles and a stronger throat hit. VG is thicker and naturally slightly sweet, producing dense clouds and a smoother experience — but its character can slightly blur the more delicate notes in complex profiles.

The quality difference is immediate and unmistakable.

The Tank and Casing

Glass tanks are chemically inert — what you put in is what you get out, without modification. Polycarbonate tanks are adequate for most e-liquids but can gradually degrade by high concentrations of citrus compounds, slowly leaching a faint chemical note into the liquid over time. It’s subtle but detectable to anyone paying attention, and it’s one reason experienced users tend to gravitate toward glass for acidic profiles. The mouthpiece material also plays a role — cheaper plastics can carry a faint synthetic aftertaste that becomes more noticeable as the device warms up during extended use.

Why Cheap Devices Taste Cheap

A budget device isn’t cutting one corner — it’s cutting all of them simultaneously:

- Inconsistent battery output that destabilises temperature with every puff
- Standard wire coils instead of mesh, producing flatter and less defined taste
- Lower-grade cotton that contributes its own flavour for the first several uses
- Polycarbonate tank that reacts with citrus profiles over time
- Synthetic flavourants at minimum viable concentration, flat and slightly chemical

Each compromise, taken alone, might be barely noticeable. Stacked together, they compound into an experience that tastes flat, occasionally burnt, and rarely like what the packaging promised.
